Company Background

The Durban Technology Hub t/a SmartXchange is an incubator whose core mandate is to provide enterprise development services to small, medium and micro enterprises (SMME'S) in the Media, Information Communication Technology and electronics sector. SmartXchange manages a programme that identifies and assists in developing quality skilled MICTe SMME's in KwaZulu Natal and also to build a pool of skilled MICTe workers that will enable KwaZulu Natal businesses to flourish. SmartXchange partners with corporates from the MICTe industry, tertiary institutions and the government sector to work towards up skilling entrepreneurs and the youth. Through these partnerships, SmartXchange is able to also contribute towards the creation of sustainable jobs, economic growth and the competitiveness of the province.

Funding

"Seed Funding or Angel investors have always been a challenge in the South African landscape. Stories are often heard of people with great ideas being frustrated by the lack of financial resources that becomes a barrier preventing the dream to become a reality. The SmartXchange Incubator therefore invites qualifying projects to submit proposals to the SmartXchange TIA Innovation Seed Fund for Media; Information Communication Technology & Electronics (MICTe) innovations. The fund is focused on applied research that will lead to the creation of products, processe s and/or series that can commercialize and advance the South African MICTe agenda"

The fund is aimed at assisting technology based SMME's in bridging financing requirements to take their innovative ideas to market by supporting SMME's and entrepreneurs in the MICTe innovation space. In order to qualify for this fund, applications must meet the following criteria:
     Be an entrepreneur or SMME based in KZN .

     The technology or business must be at a pre-revenue stage

     There is a clear market need and technology is commercially viable

     The technology is innovative and will result in competitive IP position for the business

     Does not qualify for funding from traditional banks or other funding agencies

     Funding for pre-determined seed fund activities that are listed in the application template will only be considered


The funding for innovation projects is provided as a grant, with a minimum investment of R50 000 (fifty thousand rands) and a maximum of R500 000 (five hundred thousand rands) per innovation opportunity. Successful projects will have to demonstrate the intent to further develop or commercialize the technology".

SmartXchange wins 2016 eLan Property Group KZN Top Business Award

SmartXchange is a proud winner of the 2016 eLan Property Group KZN Top Business Award, under the category, Community and Social Services. The Awards celebrates successful companies and organisations in KwaZulu-Natal across the economic sectors in both the private and public arenas. They offer an excellent opportunity for all business sectors to meet, be inspired and showcase their achievements and innovations to their peers. Brand reputation; stakeholder relations; environmental sustainability and governance are some of the factors that are taken into account when the award entrants are rated.

The KZN Top Business Awards' criteria have been drawn from the principles of the King Report on Corporate Governance 2009 (King III).

In line with King III, KZN Top Business Awards focus on the impact of the organisation/company in the economic, environmental and social spheres in KwaZulu-Natal. Factors such as brand and reputation, stakeholder relations and goodwill, environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and quality of governance are all taken into account. King III applies to all South African entities, regardless of the form of the incorporation or whether it is in the public, private or non-profit sectors.

The 2016 eLan Property Group KZN Top Business Award is the third award to be received by SmartXchange under the KZN Top Business Portfolio. The first award was received in the year 2013 which was powered by FNB and the second award was received in the year 2015 which was powered by the eLan Property Group as per the 2016 awards. SmartXchange is grateful to the eLan Property Group as well as the KZN Top Business Portfolio and remains committed to delivering on the mandate of incubation excellence which is a contributor to community upliftment.

SmartXchange Port Shepstone MICTe SMME Incubator is launched!

When SmartXchange celebrated its 10 year Anniversary, 2014, 'RED' was the topic for future plans, Replication, Expansion and Diversification. And as anticipated, on 14 July 2016, at 54 Mitchel Drive Port Shepstone, SmartXchange, with the support of the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda), the Hibiscus Coast Municipality and Vodacom, set 'RED' to life with the unveiling of the SmartXchange Port Shepstone Incubator. The unveiling of the plaque in the presence of Madam Mayor of Port Shepstone, Councillor Cynthia Mqwebu, the Minister of Small Business and Corporative Development, Minister Lindiwe Zulu, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee of Small Business and Corporative Development, Mrs Ruth Bhengu and other dignitaries will truly go down as one of the proudest accolades in SmartXchange history.

With a focus on Media, Information Communication Technology and electronics (MICTe), the similarity on all speaker presentations for the launch was 'Development'. Madam Mayor excitingly welcomed the expansion of SmartXchange to the shores of Port Shepstone highlighting that the youth of Port Shepstone and Port Shepstone residents in general, are in need of the type of intervention that SmartXchange has to offer. Minister Lindiwe Zulu pledged the support of her office towards the ventures of SmartXchange and emphasized the need for enhanced deliverance towards the development of 'Women in Business' and 'Women in MICTe'.

The SmartXchange Port Shepstone incubator reaped the fruits of a long standing relationship between Vodacom and SmartXchange as Vodacom was the main sponsor for the launch and connected the incubator with sponsored Wi-fi. Mrs Palesa Phili, Vodacom Executive Head: Enterprise Business Unit, expressed pride in having a partnership that has a shared vision and mission as with Vodacom and SmartXchange and pledged continued support towards SmartXchange as it expands its footprint throughout the region.

The launch of the SmartXchange 2015 Annual Review publication, at this gathering, saw the SmartXchange CEO, Mr Jonathan Naidoo, aligning the achievements of SmartXchange since inception, 2004, to 2015 to the envisioned outcomes of the newly established SmartXchange Port Shepstone Incubator. ACEO of Seda, Mr Lusapho Njenge, seemed pleased with this vision as he affirmed that the achievements of SmartXchange in supporting and developing Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME's) do not go unnoticed at Seda and that SmartXchange fits in well with future plans of remodelling incubators in the MICTe sector.

Mrs Ruth Bhengu, in her vote of thanks, was filled with gratitude in realising that Mr Jonathan Naidoo from Port Shepstone has not forgotten his own community. Mrs Bhengu celebrated that a developing area like Port Shepstone can now share privileges enjoyed by urban areas and therefore expressed a great amount of support and well wishes towards the SmartXchange Port Shepstone Incubator.

SmartXchange remains appreciative to stakeholders for the continued support and looks forward towards successfully delivering on its mandate at Port Shepstone.

The National Science and Technology Forum South32 Awards

The 18th National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF)-South32 Awards Gala Dinner was held in Gauteng on Thursday, 30 June 2016. Contributions to excellence in science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation were awarded and celebrated. SmartXchange was the winner in the Non Governmental Sector (NGO) focussing on technology transfer and education /training activities at a function held at Emperors Palace. This award highly celebrated the strides made by SmartXchange in developing and empowering the youth and entrepreneurs in general, in the MICTe sector. SmartXchange is proud to have been nationally recognised and continuously works towards delivering on this mandate of development and empowerment.

Take a Girl Child to Work Day 2016

SmartXchange was approached by NEF to partner with them in the 'Take a Girl Child to Work Day' 2016 which was held at the Durban ICC on 26 May 2016. The form of partnership which was required from SmartXchange was that of MC (Master of Ceremony) duty by Abegail Ndlovu. The event was a success and was highly inspiring to all attendees. The programme line up for the girls included motivational talks from, CEO of the ICC, Ms Lindiwe Rakharebe as well as Ithala Divisional Manager of Group Communications and Marketing, Ms Thuli Galelekile. The talks where later followed by a tour of the ICC and of the Moses Mabhida Stadium and lastly, a radio interview at Vuma FM.

South African Business Incubation Conference and Exhibition (SABIC) and Gala Dinner

SmartXchange attended the inaugural South African Business Incubation Conference (SABIC) hosted by the Department of Small Business Development and Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Gauteng province from the 10 to 11 March 2016.

The theme for the conference was 'Incubation as a vehicle for Economic Prosperity' and the aim of the conference was to discuss the following key issues:
-  Business incubation policy coherence between the relevant National Departments
-  Incubation funding models
-  International best practices
-  Technology commercialization
-  Role of academic institutions in the incubation space and the creation of a National, Regional and International Technology Incubation Networking forums for public and private sector as well as
    academic institution supported incubators in South Africa

SmartXchange had an exhibiting platform for the duration of the two days as well as a speaker slot. The first day of the conference saw the attendance of the Deputy President, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa and the Minister of Small Business Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu to both the exhibition and conference proceeding.

TAt a Gala dinner held on the evening of 10 March 2016, SmartXchange was announced Runner up for the Incubator of Year award 2016.

R5 MILLION CHEQUE - TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION AGENCY (TIA) REMAINS COMMITTED TO PARTNERSHIP WITH SMARTXCHANGE IN SUPPORTING MICTe SMME INNOVATIONS!!!

The SmartXchange Stakeholder Breakfast held on 13 April 2016, at the Durban Country Club, was a true reflection of government's commitment to SMME support, development and economic growth. At the breakfast, Kagiso Ntanga, representative of TIA, expressed how grateful TIA is to SmartXchange to have found in them, a partner that shares the same vision and passion for SMME's. The focus of this partnership is to provide support to MICTe SMME's and/or entrepreneurs with a grant funding of up to R500 000.00 as well as incubation support. With eight SMME's currently being supported within the programme, TIA remains pleased with the strides achieved by SmartXchange in this regard, and has therefore, boldly, pledged ongoing support towards the partnership with a cheque presentation of R5 million for further support towards SMME innovation funding.

The common factor between the stakeholders and funders of SmartXchange is always the alignment of strategies that are SMME focused. Mr Lusapho Njenge, Acting CEO of Seda, complimented SmartXchange on the excellent incubation model that is being implemented which results in SmartXchange being one of the most successful incubator under the support of Seda whom Seda is very proud of. He also expressed great delight in the progress made by SmartXchange, together with Seda, towards the establishment of the Hibiscus Coast SmartXchange MICTe SMME Incubator.

The Speaker of the eThekwini Municipality, Councillor Logie Naidoo, graced the breakfast and presented a special message of support to SmartXchange, on behalf of the Mayor. The message complimented SmartXchange in their achievements within the incubation space thus far and motivated for the incubator to continue on this spirit so as to remain as one of the city's flagship project.

The stakeholders were excited to note the 2015 achievements of the SmartXchange SMME's, when Jonathan Naidoo, CEO of SmartXchange, presented, where 55 SMME's managed to achieve a collective turnover of R 163 774 326.00 and also created a total of 322 jobs. This clearly defines the successful achievement of the SmartXchange vision.

SmartXchange MICTe SMME Awards 2015.

SmartXchange held its annual SMME Awards on the evening of 13 November 2015 at the Garden Court Marine Parade. Benchmarked as SmartXchange's most prestigious event, this evening showcased, highlighted and celebrated primarily, the achievements of the SMME's throughout the year and recognised the collaborations between SmartXchange, the SmartXchange SMME's and strategic partners. A message of support was delivered by the eThekwini Municipality Speaker, Councillor Logie Naidoo congratulating; SmartXchange on being an incubator of note, the 2015 SmartXchange graduates and the 2015 award winners. The keynote address delivered by the Seda Acting CEO, Mr Lusapho Njenge, served as encouragement to all SmartXchange partners as he commended SmartXchange for "eleven years of incubation excellence and for the visible growth of the incubator from strength to strength gaining extra ordinary momentum distinctly noticeable in the fields of customer service delivery, stakeholder relationships, financial stability and the growth of an admirable SMME base".

SmartXchange is extremely grateful to Vodacom not only for being the key sponsor to this event but for also pledging ongoing support to SmartXchange and the SmartXchange SMME's. Ms Palesa Phili, Vodacom KZN EBU Executive Head, in her address, re-affirmed Vodacom's commitment in working and supporting SMME's contributing to the holistic advancement of the African continents technology and economy.

ICT Public Service Award 2015 - GovTech

In 2015 the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), the annual host of GovTech, introduced the ICT Public Service Awards 2015. At a black tie gala dinner held at the ICC on 25th October 2015, SmartXchange was declared runner up in the category ICT Service Delivery Transformation Award - Local Government. These awards recognized outstanding service delivery, or a product or service, and/or transformation at a local government level. Key criteria in choosing finalists where to demonstrate the benefit to the citizens, demonstrate the improvement to government processes or business and to demonstrate sustainability of a service delivery solution.

The gala dinner served as a forerunner to the 2015 GovTech Conference and Exhibition which took place at the ICC from the 26th to the 28th October 2015.

Unizulu IT students visit SmartXchange

SmartXchange hosted 22 Information Technology third year students on from the University of Zululand the 20th August 2015. The students visit to SmartXchange is part of their academic programme. The expectation for this year's visit was clear as students were looking to receive guidance in exploring entrepreneurship opportunities post graduation. The day's programme was therefore set in a manner that addressed entrepreneurship particularly in the MICTe sector. Presentations ranged from the SmartXchange SMME incubation programme, skills training and entrepreneurship as well as a special presentation by Qiniso Mazubane, from Ndiza Information Systems, an SMME based at SmartXchange.

As with all of our delegations, the tour of the SmartXchange incubator was the highlight of the day for these students as this tour provided them with the opportunity to witness the SMME's in action as well as to interact and engage with them.

Mancosa Graduate School of Business

On the 20th July 2015, SmartXchange hosted delegates from the Mancosa Graduate School of Business. The visit was a study tour by business executives and senior management from Sub- Sahara Africa. The purpose of the visit was to engage with the stakeholders in analyzing the SmartXchange MICTe incubator model and to interact with the incubatees. SmartXchange planned a programme which included a presentation by the SmartXchange CEO, Jonathan Naidoo, based on the incubator model; a presentation by the Central Services Manager, Rajesh Neerachand, on the incubation programme as well as presentations by two SmartXchange SMME's. These presentations were followed by a tour of the incubator where the delegates were able to engage with the SMME's.

2015 eLan Property Group KZN Top Business Award

SmartXchange was the proud recipient of the eLan Property Group KZN Top Business Award, under the category, Community and Social Services. Held on the 21st July 2015, at the Greyville Convention Centre, the awards celebrated successful companies and organisations in KwaZulu-Natal across the economic sectors in both the private and public arenas. The awards evening offered an excellent opportunity for all business sectors to meet, be inspired and to showcase their achievements and innovations to their peers. Brand reputation, stakeholder relations, environmental sustainability and good governance are some of the factors that are taken into account in choosing the winners.

In the category of Community and Social Services, SmartXchange competed with several key institutions among whom where; PC Training and Business College, East Coast Radio, Gagasi FM, BusinessFit, Tafta and The Open Door Crises Care Centre.

It is encouraging for SmartXchange to realise that its contributions in developing SMME's is widely celebrated and recognised as having an impact on the KZN economy.

SmartXchange Stakeholder Breakfast Forum 2015

On the 29 of May 2015, SmartXchange held its annual Stakeholder Breakfast forum at the Durban Country Club. This breakfast forum is held annually for the purpose of presenting the SmartXchange Annual Review to the SmartXchange strategic funders, partners and corporates.

The eThekwini Municipality speaker, Councillor Logie Naidoo graced this event with his presence and presented a keynote message on behalf of the eThekwini Municipality, highlighting that SmartXchange remains a wonderful organization with a rich history and is one of the city’s creation that has grabbed the attention of the people around the world. As the SmartXchange strategic partners delivered messages of support, it was pleasing to note the trend where each strategic partner gave commitment to continuously support SmartXchange and SmartXchange - SMME initiatives. These partners include the eThekwini Municipality, the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda), Mict Seta, the Technology Innovations Agency (TIA), Accenture and recently, the KZN Film Commission.

Ms Palesa Phili, the Vodacom KZN Executive Head of Enterprise Business, boldly stated that the partnership that exists between Vodacom and SmartXchange will always be a winning partnership as they are committed to the SMME market and are looking to grow a number of SMME's into valuable partners to Vodacom and therefore Vodacom was the proud key sponsor of this year's breakfast.

When the CEO of SmartXchange, Mr Jonathan Naidoo, presented the organizations review for the year 2014 leading to 2015, he passed special thanks to all of the SmartXchange strategic partners that played a role in growing SmartXchange into a great story to tell. He further presented on the SmartXchange replication plan which spoke to Mr Oupa Mopaki's, CEO of Mict Seta, message of support that expressed the need for SmartXchange to be replicated in other regions, so as to continuously achieve the successful and effective utilization of developmental funding. This need was also expressed by Mr Barlow Manilal, CEO of TIA, who urged for SmartXchange to not be confined to one region, but to rather expand its reach using the existing partnerships. He said that TIA continues to enable creative talent by creating a platform where TIA becomes a catalyst to new talent for opportunities for entrepreneurs and SMME's, in order to achieve this, TIA remains committed to SmartXchange.

The highlight of the breakfast was Ms Carol Coetzee's, CEO of KZN Film Commission, surprise announcement about the recently signed seven million and five hundred thousand rand memorandum of agreement between SmartXchange and the KZN Film Commission. This funding is directed at the establishment and support of SMME's in the media space, to become servicing companies that provide shooting locations, editing studios, equipment hire and much more. Ms Coetzee is convinced that the province could be a leader in this regard if this project is implemented well.

SmartXchange remains humbled by the support provided by the funders, strategic partners, corporates and most importantly the SmartXchange SMME's.

Sifco Trading partners with Sigma International and Silulu Investments for Limpopo Province Innovation Strategy

Sifco Trading in partnership with Sigma International and Silulu Investments have been awarded a project to the value of R1.8 million to develop the Innovation Strategy for the Limpopo Province. The letter of appointment was proudly received by Nkosana Sifumba, Director of Sifco Trading and SmartXchange SMME. This is one of the few major contracts that the company has received.

Website Factory receives contract for the Govan Mbeki Awards

Website Factory was awarded a contract to capture and produce a video for the Govan Mbeki Awards 2015 for the second year running. The contract was for the value of one hundred and thirty five thousand. The first task in relation to the contract requirements was for Website Factory to capture videos of all the housing projects that were nominated for this year's event in the eleven districts of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province. The second task was for Website Factory to edit the video of the main event, Gala Dinner, which took place of the 19th May 2015.

Durban Motion Pictures nominated to attend the Cannes Film Festival

Bonie Sithebe of Durban Motion Pictures was nominated to attend the Festival de Cannes which is a celebration of cinematographic art that showcase the new writing, new genres and new visual innovations of our times. The Cannes Film Festival is considered one of the most prestigious events that celebrate art and the historic progress made towards it thus far.

The visit to Cannes offered Bonnie an opportunity to explore the industry and gather information relating to the world class film market. It also provided a much needed opportunity for her to promote her feature film project 'Strange Love'. Further to this, the festival raised awareness to film makers, about the different film genres that create world class cinema through the screening sessions that were scheduled. It also raised awareness of the available financing opportunities and provided a platform for networking and the creation of relationships.

Creative Lead Director attends Music Film and Technology Conference, MIDEM and Botswana Music Conference

Sphephelo Mbele, Director of Creative Lead, who is a partner to the KZN Music Imbizo, a music business conference founded by Creative Lead, participated in a three week long exhibition and conference held at South by South West in Austin Texas. SXSW is one of the most highly recommended conferences for entrepreneurs in the creative space ie. music, film and interactive technology. The invitation for him to attend this conference was a follow up to a presentation he delivered in New York (USA) in October 2014. Sphephelo had the opportunity to interact with amazing talent in the ICT space as over two hundred ICT and innovation focused companies exhibited.

Sphephelo also attended the MIDEM which was held at Cannes, France as well as the Botswana Music Conference on Technology and Music. These conferences provided the company with the platform to grow its network and learn about innovation within the music industry from industry leaders.

SMME's benefit in the Maxum Media Accelerator Programme

The Maxum Media Accelerator (MMA) is a project that was run by the KZN Film Commission. The programme assists fifteen to twenty media companies to be developed and expand their media capabilities. The mentor for this programme was Harry Hofmeyr, a Content Producer Urban Brew Studios and Media Strategist.

Eight SmartXchange SMME’s participated in this training and mentorship programme by Harry Hofmeyr. Of the eight SMME’S, three participated in the programme and further received grant funding from the KZN Film Commission.

SmartXchange SMME's appointed as East3 rout trip delegates

Zimkitha Jam Jam Director of Africa Investments and Qiniso Mazubane, Director of Ndiza Information Systems, were appointed as delegates to a governmental delegation on an East3 route trip to Seychelles which was held from 29 July 2015 to 02 August 2015. The purpose of the visit focused on Tourism, Trade and Investment and Business. The theme for the 2015 East3 trip was: Merging the four countries together in terms of Tourism, Trade and Investments and Business. The four participating countries were South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique and Seychelles.

The SMME's valued their interaction with MEC of Economic Development and Tourism, Mike Mabuyakhulu and (title) Ms Ina Cronje as well as the one on one business networking sessions with both international and local delegates. The delegation consisted of Government officials from the Department of Trade and Investment, Department of Economic Development and Tourism, South African Revenue Services and the Chamber of Commerce. Delegates representing the Law, Hospitality, ICT, Engineering and Agriculture were also present.

Zimkitha was also shortlisted for the Young Entrepreneur Trip to Israel but was however not successful in the final round but is excited about been given the opportunity and participating in the program.

Egsibit shortlisted for the National Presidents Gazelles

The President’s Gazelles is a new programme specifically designed to support and accelerate the growth of SMME's which have shown that they have real growth potential. Every year, two hundred finalists will be chosen, with the top forty benefiting from a range of support activities and interventions to ensure they operate as close as possible to their maximum potential, Lungile Shandu, Director of Egsibit has been shortlisted for the National Gazelles programme and was interviewed in December 2016.

Lungile has also been accepted into the Seda database, Mpumalanga Province, for the offering of Business Compliance Coaching. This occurred shortly after she won the Best Women in MICTe 2015 award amongst the women SMME’s within the SmartXchange incubation programme. Egsibit has been receiving impressive contracts throughout the year from contracts to provide Business Skills and Compliance training to contracts for the supply of computers at thirty schools in Zululand and a contract to provide Technical Support Training to fifty training technicians at the Department of Education.

Nyachengos named Best MICT SMME of the Year 2015

Andile Gumbi of Nyachengos Video Productions was named Best SmartXchange MICTe SMME of the Year 2015. This award recognises the best performing SMME in the Media, Information Communication Technology and electronics sector. Andile received twenty five thousand rands as price money. Evidence of the company,s progress can be gathered from the fact that it had been blacklisted upon its entrance into the SmartXchange incubation programme, 2012, but due to the involvement of SmartXchange in terms of clearing Andile's name, Nyachengos was then on seen eligible to receiving grants from a number of granting agencies. These agencies include the National Development Agency (NYDA), the SAB Foundation Tholoana Enterprise programme and the Seda Technology Transfer fund.

The NYDA awarded Nyachengos with a business operation grant whilst the SAB Foundation Tholoana Enterprise programme recognised and selected Nyachengos to participate as one of the 15 high-performing KZN entrepreneurs amongst seven hundred countrywide applications received by SAB. This resulted in Nyachengos being the recipient of two hundred and fifty thousand rand from SAB.

After participating in programmes designed to develop entrepreneurs which were mostly recommended and paid for by SmartXchange, Andile has been securing a number of contracts. These new opportunities focused primarily on events at the International Convention Centre. Andile has set his target to double his 2015 turnover in 2016.
